There’s no one way to successfully approach digital marketing and social media for your business. In a recent article on BusinessInsider.com, Guy Kawasakiwas interviewed…
One of the questions asked of Kawasaki was: “Let’s say an entrepreneur is new to the whole social media thing. There’s a tendency to hire a consultant and formulate a plan. Is that the right approach?” Guy’s answer was, “No.” I love that! Kawasaki went on to talk about how you need to just dive in and start experimenting – get to know some of these social networks to figure out how they’ll fit into your marketing mix, if they’ll fit into your marketing mix. This is the approach GrowLoop takes, and it’s really the difference between our digital marketing coaching and simply hiring someone to do it for you without fully understanding what they’re doing and where the value is. GrowLoop wants to understand your goals and how you’re currently using social media as part of your digital marketing strategy, but our process is such that you’re really creating your own strategy the way it needs to work for you and GrowLoop is offering you some best practices surrounding digital marketing while building an incremental plan of how you will reach your digital marketing goals. By understanding the tools at your disposal you can determine what will work best for your business as you try things and bounce ideas off of your GrowLoop digital marketing coach. What happens is: we both learn, you gain an outside partner to help you, which gives additional confidence to what you’re doing, ultimately crafting a digital marketing strategy that is unique to you and your business, designed to work the way you work and with the time and resources you have available. By follow this kind of process a digital marketing strategy that provides the results you’re looking for will emerge that is right for you and your business, and you’ll own it and have a better understanding of why it’s working or not. However, there’s no silver bullet – you have to do the work and be a willing student of digital marketing and your business. The nice thing is that mainstream social networks are free to use and experiment with, and what works for one business may not work for another. The important point is to build a set of objectives for what you’re doing with digital marketing and your social media efforts so you can measure against your goals. As your digital marketing coach works with you to help you better understand how various digital tools work and how you can uniquely use them in variety of combinations to reach your digital marketing business goals, you’ll realize that your digital marketing strategy will emerge. The best part about it is that you’ll better understand why it works, or doesn’t, because you built it through experimentation within a timeline to reach your digital marketing goals. Too often entrepreneurs hire consultants to do the work for them and the entrepreneurs never really understand why it works or doesn’t work because they don’t fully embrace diving into social networks on their own to understand the nuances and how they might use those nuances to their advantage. And believe me, I’ve heard the counter argument: ‘I’m an entrepreneur. I’m busy running my company. I don’t have time for that.’ However, this is your business, and as a solopreneur social media blurs the lines between your personal life and your business – do you really want someone else telling your target audience who they think you are, or would you like your target audience to know from the horse’s mouth? I know my answer. Any success I’ve ever had has come from putting in the time and doing the work – digital marketing is no different. However, you don’t have to venture off alone. GrowLoop can walk with you to help you set goals, brainstorm, offer best practices and hold you accountable toward reaching your goals, but you’re in charge and you’re doing the work so you can reap the rewards.
