Essentially, what I took away was: If you need work done quickly that is in a specific area of marketing it may be best to hire a contractor (free agent or freelancer) than to take on an employee. However, if you need industry pros that can wear multiple hats and, even if you’re growing, you need folks with a variety of industry experience, you might be better served by hiring such pros to join your company on a more permanent basis.
